When I first thought about it, I didn’t know how I got into fashion.
I didn’t think I was a very fashionable kid.
I wasn’t a tomboy, but I despised jeans and makeup with a passion, I went through a phase where I only wanted to wear my puppy dog tee shirts and soft black pants, and for all I know, I probably invented the yoga pants trend. And white sunglasses…I definitely created that trend.
(But I always wore puppy dog or kitty cat tee shirts. They were a few of my favorite things! I wanted to be a Veterinarian!)
Then, the more I thought about it, the more I remembered!
I really liked plaid skirts and knee high socks. I lived in my slip on clogs. They don’t make them like that anymore.
I was a hat girl. If a hat doesn’t look good on me then it’s a bad hat. True to this day. I love hats and I hate shoes. Shoes never match no matter what. You can have the perfect outfit and the shoes won’t match. It’s just the way it is.
I wore my hair in a really tight cheerleader style pony tail. I remember telling my Mom “NO LUMPS!” Of course now it has to be straightened or curled or its deemed “messy bun” day. All the “lumps” in the world…it became a style.
I liked what my Mom liked. She helped me determine my style like any mom does. She’s the one who takes you shopping and says “yes or no” anyway! She’s not buying something she doesn’t like or if it’s to expensive! You know you hated it then, but you know it’s exactly how you shop now! I bet she’s still your best shopping buddy too!
And of course, HOW could I forget?
I played Dress Up with my best friend ALL THE TIME!
It was the highlight of our pictures! (Aside from the one of the 5 year old’s in trainer bra’s. That was a good one.)
Dress up time was antique. Thrift store and hand-me-down white lace dresses, skirts, and gloves…ballet shoes, and clip on earrings, complete with frilly lace hats.
Those were the days.
So it turns out that maybe fashion and style was with me all along.
I’m glad I’m continuing my story with Megan’s Sewing Box, and that I will be able to give girls the gift of finding their own style!
